A 56e edition to brighten your Summer

The 56e Tibor Varga Music Academy edition will take place in Sion from July 16 to August 18. More than 230 students are expected to take part in one of the 33 masterclasses offered. Current and former students as well as professors will play about fifty concerts for the public all along summer.

2018 innovations: chamber music, piano duets and electronic music

New professors and ensembles will join the array of wonderful regular artists of the Academy: Xavier Phillips (cello), Marc-Antoine Bonanomi (double bass), Miguel Da Silva (viola), Julien Zufferey (violin), David Rey (trombone) will teach for the first time. The masterclass offering has been expanded to include a chamber music class given by the SIGNUM QUARTET, and piano duet lessons by Cornelia Venetz, a local pianist. A new electronic music masterclass will be provided by Vincent Rybicki for beginners and professional musicians

A networking platform

All masterclasses aim to reinforce exchanges between students and professors. For one week, students from all over the world will meet renowned professors working in the main Universities of Music in Switzerland (HEMU Vaud-Valais-Fribourg, HEM of Geneva) and in Europe (Madrid, Londres, Paris, Lyon, Münich, Detmold, etc). The Campus Musicus, the youth orchestra camp for musicians aged between 10 and 20 years placed under the direction of Yuram Ruiz, completes the program of the Academy.

Concerts for all

All masterclasses culminate in a series of concerts played by students and professors. The young soloists will play free concerts throughout the region: notably at the Bella Tola in St-Luc, in Vex and of course in Sion (Grenette and Pénitencier); their professors will perform in prestigious venues such as the Fondation Gianadda (July 29), the Fondation De Wolf – in partnership with Schubertiade Sion (August 3), or the Lac Souterrain in St-Léonard (August 15). Furthermore the Academy is proud to offer for the first time an Alumni concert. This year the Yakovlev duo, composed of two former students of Tibor Varga working now as professional musicians at the Tonhalle in Zurich, has been chosen to introduce this new concert (Lac Souterrain in St-Léonard on July 25).
